{"id":958,"date":"2014-04-28T10:36:57","date_gmt":"2014-04-28T10:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lync2013.org\/?p=958"},"modified":"2014-05-12T09:32:58","modified_gmt":"2014-05-12T09:32:58","slug":"server_is_not_responding_or_is_not_considered_suitable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/?p=958","title":{"rendered":"Error Adding a Windows 2012 R2 DC: &#8220;Server is not Responding or is not Considered Suitable&#8221; (No SYSVOL Or NETLOGON Share)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\"><strong>Scenario<\/strong>:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Brand new forest \/ domain with the first domain controller using Windows 2012 R2 (let&#8217;s call the domain\u00a0<em>domainname.corp)<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Domain functional level: Windows Server 2012 R2<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Forest functional level: Windows Server 2012 R2<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">First domain controller presents\u00a0no issue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">All the operating systems are updated with Windows Update, last check for updates\u00a0on 25 April, 2014.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">\u00a0<strong>Problem:<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Added a second Windows 2012 R2 domain controller (let\u2019s call it DC02) the server is no able to work as expected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Launching net share on DC02 it has <strong style=\"color: #000000; font-style: normal;\">no SYSVOL or NETLOGON share<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\"><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-style: normal;\">DCDIAG<\/strong> shows a \u201cwell-known\u201d error:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Starting test: <strong style=\"color: #000000; font-style: normal;\">Advertising<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Warning: DsGetDcName returned information for \\\\\u201ddomainname.corp\u201d, when we were trying to reach DC02<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-style: normal;\">SERVER IS NOT RESPONDING or IS NOT CONSIDERED SUITABLE<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\"><strong>Solution<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">I used an authoritative synchronization for DFSR-replicated SYSVOL (see TechNet post <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2218556\">http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2218556<\/a> )<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Note for Windows 2012 R2<\/strong>:<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\"><strong>DFSRDiag.exe<\/strong> (the tool required for the steps in the aforementioned solution) is not installed by default in Windows 2012 R2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">To enable it you have to use Server Manager to add the feature. It is inside \u201cRemote Server Administration Tools\u201d -&gt; \u201cRole Administration Tools\u201d -&gt; \u201cFile Services Tools\u201d. You need to add \u201cDFS Management Tools\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Note on the Windows 2012 R2 installation<\/strong>:<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">I had the same error both installing directly from an ISO or using a template I had prepared in a previous scenario. Looks like the problem is not related to the specific Windows installation.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>Note on the TechNet post (updated 12 May 2014)<\/strong>:<\/h5>\n<p>The TechNet article does not say to set again the <strong>msDFSR-options=0<\/strong> as soon as you have finished the steps. I have asked to a good friend of mine &amp; Directory Services MVP Leone Randazzo (\u00a0<strong>@LeoneRandazzo<\/strong> )\u00a0if it makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>He made a verification and pointed out that &#8220;after restarting the DC used for authoritative restore of SysVol (usually the PDC Emulator) the value of the LDAP\u00a0msDFSR-Options = 1\u00a0is reset to the default value which is 0.\u00a0This process does not take place immediately, which means that if you look at the value after running the logon to restart the value is still 1!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thank you Leone, I wish I was able to meet more IT Pros like you\u00a0\ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Error Adding a Windows 2012 R2 Dc: DCDIAG shows &#8220;Server is not Responding or is not Considered Suitable&#8221;.
