{"id":234,"date":"2013-05-08T10:21:35","date_gmt":"2013-05-08T08:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lync2013.org\/?p=234"},"modified":"2014-05-13T09:32:26","modified_gmt":"2014-05-13T09:32:26","slug":"webrtc-the-terrible-child-in-the-unified-communications-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/?p=234","title":{"rendered":"WebRTC : The \u201cTerrible Child\u201d in the Unified Communications World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Posted on\u00a0<a title=\"Enterprise Tech Central\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.itcentralstation.com\/\">Enterprise Tech Central<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Web Real Time Communications (WebRTC) is a development plan originally owned by Google that has been transformed into a free open project (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webrtc.org\/\">http:\/\/www.webrtc.org\/<\/a>) to enable rich, high quality Real-Time Communications (RTC) capabilities for compliant<a id=\"_GPLITA_0\" title=\"Click to Continue &gt; by Savings Wave\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.itcentralstation.com\/webrtc-the-terrible-child-in-the-unified-communications-world\/#\">web<\/a>\u00a0browsers via simple JavaScript APIs\u00a0and HTML5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1397\" src=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC1-300x168.png\" alt=\"RTC1\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC1-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC1-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC1-580x325.png 580w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC1.png 974w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">With WebRTC, developers are able to addreal-time communication with a few simple API calls in their JavaScript using a\u00a0browser (Chrome or Firefox) that have all this built in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">This infers that there is already a coverage for a large part of the existing market and the number of potential users will increase with the integration of WebRTC in Internet Explorer (something that should be seen in 2013).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Existing UC solutions for desktops and mobile devices require applications and\/or browser plugins. WebRTC offers the promise of a pre-installed feature installed in every desktop and mobile browser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">The demonstrations seen up to this moment (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webrtc.org\/demo\">http:\/\/www.webrtc.org\/demo<\/a>\u00a0) are really impressive, with different operating systems and browsers talking to each other in a really smooth manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">The capability to create a call or a meeting with no need for a plug-in or an app would be really interesting, resolving common issues such as incompatibilities due to the operating systems and devices fragmentation or the risk of malware slipstreamed in the apps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1398\" src=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC2-300x256.png\" alt=\"RTC2\" width=\"400\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC2-300x256.png 300w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC2-150x128.png 150w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC2-526x450.png 526w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC2.png 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">During this year a couple of solutions based on WebRTC (<b>Bistri<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Twelephone<\/b>) have been released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Bistri (<a href=\"https:\/\/bistri.com\/\">https:\/\/bistri.com\/<\/a>) allows one to connect with Facebook, Google, Windows Live, Yahoo and others unifying our \u201cpresence\u201d (the indicator of our state and of our willingness and capability to communicate) and enabling the use of chat, audio and video calls from inside a web browser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Twelephone (<a href=\"http:\/\/twelephone.com\/\">http:\/\/twelephone.com\/<\/a>) integrates with Twitter as a base platform for identity and messaging, offering the high quality audio and video features of WebRTC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">It is interesting to say that the WebRTC specifications include a capability to transmit data that is not limited to audio and video streams, crating the basics for further and different usages<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1399 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC3-1024x294.png\" alt=\"RTC3\" width=\"580\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC3-1024x294.png 1024w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC3-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC3-150x43.png 150w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC3-580x166.png 580w, https:\/\/modern-workplace.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RTC3.png 1074w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">On the bad side, WebRTC is in its infancy, and there are potential issues especially regarding the interoperability if there will be no agreement on the standards to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">For example the Microsoft proposal (CU-WebRTC), is a bit different from the ones included in Chrome and Firefox.
